Harmonic raised $50M to judge every prompt. Now it has to out-ship the suites.

Crosspoint led an oversubscribed Series B for small models that read what employees send to AI before it lands. Total raised: $76M. Valuation and ARR: Undisclosed.

Every platform vendor has a shadow-AI slide now. Harmonic Security just raised $50 million on the bet that a slide is not a control.

On Oct 14, Harmonic announced an oversubscribed Series B led by Crosspoint Capital Partners, with existing investors also in. Its previous raise was a $17.5 million Series A led by Next47 in October 2024. SiliconANGLE puts total investor money at $76 million. Valuation: Undisclosed. ARR: Undisclosed.

What the product actually does. Harmonic inspects whatever an employee sends to an AI tool at work before it gets there. Custom small language models read each interaction in context and return a verdict within milliseconds. Harmonic’s own example is the right one: a live credential pasted into a chat window should get caught, and a developer referencing a database schema should pass (per SiliconANGLE). That distinction is the whole game. Keyword DLP can’t make it. It either blocks the schema and gets switched off in a week, or it waves the key through.

Coverage started in the browser. Over the past year Harmonic pushed the same checks into desktop AI applications and agentic workflows, which is where it says trouble like employees signing in to AI services with personal accounts tends to start. That is the right direction. The browser was the easy surface. The hard one is the desktop client with file access and the agent calling tools on someone’s behalf.

The board pitch is the clever part. A Usage Intelligence layer runs on the same models and shows which AI use cases are paying off, down to individual employees who found a faster way to work. CEO Alastair Paterson says “every board I talk to” wants to know whether AI is delivering value, not just how to cut the risk. That turns a security tool into an adoption-ROI dashboard and puts a second budget owner in the room. It is also the feature most likely to become a report nobody opens. Ask for a real sample board pack.

Distribution reads mid-market and channel. Climb Global Solutions and Distology signed on as distribution partners. Cisco lists Harmonic among the ecosystem integrations for Agent Builder on its Cloud Control platform, connected over Model Context Protocol. A Claude Compliance API integration pulls activity logs from Anthropic-hosted Claude Platform deployments, plus conversation content for Claude Enterprise customers. Harmonic claims more than 100 customers, millions of covered employees, and more than 90 staff across the U.S. and U.K. (per SiliconANGLE).

Here is the tension. A day earlier, Sophos shipped shadow-AI discovery as an add-on inside Fusion. The big suites are all pushing the same language into renewals. An EDR attach sees processes and network calls. It does not, by default, decide whether the text inside a prompt is a secret or a schema. Harmonic’s wedge is semantic verdicts at the prompt layer, across browser, desktop and agent. If that wedge holds, the pure-play survives. If the platforms get to good-enough classification, $76 million is a lot of capital for a feature.

Look at what is and isn’t disclosed. More than 100 customers. $76 million raised. No ARR, no seat price, no valuation. The $50 million plus the $17.5 million Series A comes to $67.5 million, so roughly $8.5 million came in before the A. “Millions of employees covered” is a coverage metric, not a revenue one. Oversubscribed rounds mean investors want in. They don’t tell you retention.

What we’d test in a bake-off. False-positive rate on real prompts from your own engineers, not a curated demo set. Latency at the 99th percentile with the model on the hot path. What happens when an agent’s tool call gets blocked mid-workflow: does the job fail cleanly or hang? Where inspection runs, and whether the model can sit in your tenant. And how Usage Intelligence squares with UK and EU employee-monitoring rules before anyone starts ranking staff by prompt.

The read. Pure-play AI usage governance is still raising real money because the platforms haven’t proven prompt-level judgment yet. Harmonic has a window to make “semantic, not keyword” a line item in the RFP. Once every suite claims it does the same, that window closes.
